Prea beach is famous locally and internationally for its constant and generally stronger winds than other beaches along the coast. There are two reasons behind this: – the first one is global and is connected to the trade winds, in our case the south-easterly winds, which means that along the entire coast, the wind usually blows in a West-North-Westerly direction due to the:
1 The trade winds
A quick explanation about how the trades work: The radiation from the sun warms the air over the equator area, causing it to rise. The rising hot air then heads South toward the pole (if you are located South of the Equator) at an altitude of up to 10,000 m. When this wave of hot air reaches a latitude of about 25° South, it cools down and drops back to the surface of the earth heading back North towards the Equator (where the heated air created a depression as we saw in the beginning), therefor completing the cycle. Given that planet Earth rotates in a Easterly direction, the effective wind comes from the East!
2 The sea-breeze boost!
The second effect involved, which changes our wind direction daily from slightly Southerly to slightly Northerly and assures Prea stronger winds than most other beaches is known as the sea-breeze, in which the National Park of Jericoacoara has a special role: – Once again, the sun is involved, but in this case on a daily basis.
1 Every morning, the sun rises around 6:00 am and heats up the arid sand-dune area South-East of Prea (the National Park of Jericoacoara). As hours go by, this area deprived of vegetation heats up much faster than the air above the Ocean next to it. So usually between 10 and 11 am this heated air rises (vertically)
This warmer air is attracted towards the Ocean which is cooler.
The warm air that moved over the Ocean cools down.
4As the air gets closer to the surface, it is attracted towards the National Park area where the local depression was created (in number 1), therefor boosting our previously Easterly trade winds. Additionnaly the West-North-Westerly direction changes to a West-South-Westerly direction, giving Prea beach the side onshore wind which is safest for the practice of kitesurfing.
Land breeze effect at night
As the sun sets in the evening, the arid ground of the National Park cools down and the air above the Ocean tends to rise creating a depression, therefor changing the wind direction to slightly offshore direction at night and until about 10 to 11 am when the wind switches back to side onshore. Cycle completed!
The table below represents the percentage of kitable days for each month. A day is considered kitable when the wind blows for more than 3 hours above 16 knots. You will easily deduce that if you come between August and December, your chances of kiting every single day are close to 100%. The month of July is considered first month of the season (with 70% kitable days), and January is considered the last month of the season (with about 55%).
